Wade Weber, Youth Program Specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, spoke to Rotary on September 21 about 4-H, its history and current programming. Wade covers a six county area and oversees the 4-H programs in each of the counties. 4-H is the programmatic outreach of the land grant universities through education services to young citizens in our communities. 4-H began in 1904 and started with the three H’s – head, heart and hands – and has since added the 4th H – health. The initial focus is to make youth fit for self government, self control, self help and to make them contributing citizens of character.  4-H today has become more than an agriculture club and focuses on “hands-on” learning. An example or a program recently started in Spirit Lake and Okoboji is a Robotics program built on the foundation of finding real world solutions to everyday problems.
