Jeff Vierkant, Vice President of Manufacturing at Pure Fishing, was the program at the regualr noon meeting of the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club on Wednesday, December 16.

Vierkant updated the group on the current manufacturing processes (line and bait focused) in Spirit Lake, and shared a little about the brands owned by Jarden, the owner of Pure Fishing - brand such as Mr. Coffee and Oster. Vierkant also talked about Pure Fishing's lean manufacturing strategy, which focuses on reducing eight primary wastes of manufacturing - overproduction, waiting, overprocessing, excess inventory, unnecessary movement, defects and unused co-worker productivity. Based on this process, bait and line made in Spirit Lake is shipped either directly to small retailers or to a major retailer's distribution center, boxed for individual stores to keep handling to a minimum. The packages often don't even show up on a distribution center's inventory but go directly to a truck and to stores. Vierkant said that the Spirit Lake operation is vital to Pure Fishing's success and is always looking for ways to be more efficient and to implement viable ideas from its coworkers.
