Josh Carr, executive camp director at Camp Foster, spoke to Rotary on Wednesday, January 12. Camp Foster will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this summer.

Josh shared the story behind Camp Foster and how it was named after TD Foster who got the ball rolling with the camp. Camp Foster was the very first statewide camp and the first programs were swimming and religious studies. The Camp Foster facility has year round lodges and cabins for use and rental, but is used primarily for day and residential camps in the summer. Campers come from all over - students have been here from Connecticut, Seattle, Kansas City and even Spain. Programs includes everything from canoe, ranch, shooting sports, art, climbing, horses, sailing, kayak, etc. Spirit of America, is a nationally recognized boater safety program offered at the camp. It is one of three pilot programs in the US. Camp Foster also had a totally integrated Miracle Burn Camp, which is the only integrated one in the US. Camp Foster has a 72% return rate of campers (based on last year's figures) and 4 of 10 campers are from Iowa.
