Dana Kauffman with the American Cancer Society spoke to the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary on Wednesday, March 9 at their regular noon meeting.

Dana, who is a 5 year cancer survivor herself, is the director for a 5-county area: Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Buena Vista and Cherokee. She has held the position for about 3 1/2 years. The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer. The organization was founded in 1913 when the survival rate was 1 in 9. Today the survival rate is 3 in 5. ACS is the oldest and largest health volunteer advocacy group and has 3 million volunteers in the US. Recently the organization "freshened" its look with a focus of "Stay Well. Get Well. Find Cures. Give Back." and used the positioning line "The Official Sponsor of Birthdays."

In Iowa last year, $5.9 million was raised for the ACS and it was able to fund $6.5 million in research. 5,400 volunteers helped last year (Iowa is the #2 state in the country with numbers of volunteers). In 2009, 113,000 people visited the website to research cancer. The Midwest Division of ACS (which Iowa is a part of) is the first division in the US to have all states go smoke-free.

This year's Relay for Life will be held on Friday night, July 8 at the Spirit Lake track. a meal will begin at 5:30 with the opening ceremonies to be held at 7:00 pm and the luminary lighting at dark.
